Congratulations to the project team at Oceana Business Park on the successful completion of Phase 2 of a new manufacturing facility for SMD Ltd.
Phase 2 was awarded to NCS in September 2013 and is an extension to Phase 1 providing a manufacturing facility in excess of 28,000ft2.
NCS also constructed phase 1, which was handed over in March 2012. It was on the success of this first project that NCS were awarded phase 2. NCS were responsible for superstructure design and full construction of the building which is 80 metres in length, 36 metres wide and 16 metres overall height. The construction comprises piled foundations, structural steel frame, built-up wall and roof cladding, a syphonic drainage system and mechanical and electrical services for welfare and storage rooms.
The buildings incorporate 2No x 50 tonne and 2 No x 25 tonne overhead cranes which run the full length of the facility. This gives SMD greater flexibility and significant lifting capacity as the building is designed to allow cranes to carry out tandem lifts.
SMD are planning to use the facility for production of state of the art Subsea Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV’s) as well as Launch and Recovery Systems which are operated from high tech control rooms situated on the deck of a ship.
Phase 1 and Phase 2 were both delivered on time, within budget and with no safety incidents which is a credit to the whole team and the collaborative working approach that was entered into from day one of the project. The construction delivery team was made up of Oceana Business Park Ltd(Developer); SMD Ltd (End User); BT Bell Consulting Engineers; NCS Ltd and bespoke financing arrangements from a peer to peer funding provider organised by Central Union.
NCS Director, Dave Gardner stated “NCS are excited to be involved with delivering this new facility for SMD, one of the world’s leading manufacturers in subsea technology. The strong working relationship and collaborative approach has contributed greatly to an enjoyable and successful project.”
Gary Ward of SMD stated: “NCS have been a pleasure to work with and have now delivered 2 projects for SMD on time and on budget and to a first class standard, we look forward to a continued relationship for an on-going development.”
